Good dental care can help you to avoid many dental issues. Common dental issues like tooth decay and gum disease are preventable, and doing so does not cost you much. It is a simple matter of making your oral health a priority so you rarely ever have to get serious dental treatments.

Getting the most out of your dental care

Let us take a look at some dental care tips that will keep your teeth and gums healthy:

1. Make oral hygiene a priority

Taking good care of your teeth barely costs a thing, but it protects your teeth against a variety of issues like tooth decay, gum disease, and infection. Bacteria in the mouth consume sugars in tiny food bits left on teeth after meals and they excrete teeth-destroying acids. These bacteria form plaque – which hardens into tartar when left on teeth. Plaque and tartar are responsible for most of the dental issues people deal with like tooth decay and gum disease.

Dentists recommend brushing teeth at least two times a day to minimize how long plaque makes contact with teeth. Flossing once a day helps keep the tight spaces between teeth clean, and a good mouthwash cleans whatever brushing and flossing misses. Mouthwash also helps to reduce oral bacteria populations and it re-mineralizes teeth with fluoride.

2. Drink lots of water

Water helps to neutralize acids made by oral bacteria and it removes food particles from teeth surfaces, starving these microorganisms. Water also promotes saliva production and saliva also helps to keep the mouth clean. Make it a habit to often sip water during the day to keep your teeth healthy.

3. Eat teeth-friendly foods

Teeth need minerals like calcium to remain strong and healthy so dentists recommend consuming calcium-rich foods like dairy products and leafy green vegetables. Tap water is also great for teeth since it is fluoridated in most developing countries. Being deficient in important nutrients like calcium puts teeth at risk, and it also leads to weaker bones.

4. Visit a dentist twice a year

Going to a dentist at least two times each year allows the oral professional to examine your teeth looking for any developing issues. Dental issues are typically considerably easier to treat in the early stages. For example, the early stage of tooth decay can be reversed with a fluoride treatment, but the advanced stages might require a root canal or extraction.

Dentists also perform preventative treatments like teeth cleanings during routine check-ups. The procedure is done to remove tartar from teeth surfaces. Tartar cannot be removed by brushing so getting regular teeth cleanings are important to get rid of it before it leads to decay or gum disease.

Regular visits to the dentist also give the dentist a chance to perform cosmetic treatments. The better a person feels about their smile, the more likely they are to make oral hygiene a priority.
